New Flavor Alert from Sprinkles (and it's Savory!)

Last week Sprinkles offered a limited-time-only cupcake for the birth of the royal baby George.

The next big news in the Sprinkles Cupcake world is their new flavor. Yes, a new flavor is exciting, but this cupcake exceeds that excitement because it is Sprinkles first savory cupcake!!

I knew this day would come, and of course it has BACON!

"Thick, smoky bacon is baked to a crisp and woven into our Madagascar Bourbon vanilla cake. Topped with rich, buttery maple cream cheese frosting."

Yum! Of course I'm super thrilled to try this new cupcake, but I must say that Sprinkles is a bit tardy on the savory cupcake bandwagon. I tried my first bacon cupcake probably five years ago.

Although Sprinkles labels this as a new flavor, it will only be available September 6-22. Don't miss out!

Sweet and Savory Done Right

I'm a HUGE sweet & savory fan! What's not to love with flavors like Sea Salted Caramel, Pistachio Truffle, Maple Syrup & Bacon. Do I have you salivating yet?!

Sweetapolita does it right with these Highway to Heaven cupcakes from The Sugar Cube cookbook. "Moist super-chocolatey delight that are brushed with coffee syrup, injected with homemade salted caramel sauce, topped with a rich sexy bittersweet ganache, drizzled with more salted caramel sauce and then, if you love double-wowing the crowd, spears of caramel-drizzled potato chips, of course." Yes, that's why they are called Highway to Heaven cupcakes, because I've died and gone to heaven. Recipe found here.

Super Bowl Buffalo Chicken Cupcakes from Cupcake Project

I'm not a big football fan, but I do love the Super Bowl. Sadly, not for the football, but for the food. The Super Bowl is less than two weeks away and I'm already starting to see lots of great food ideas for the big day.

Cupcake Project posted these Buffalo Chicken Cupcakes, which would be perfect for any Super Bowl party. You may be wondering, like I was, if these cupcakes are sweet or savory. Cupcake Project answers this question, as well as others, in her post (answer: they are savory).

What is your favorite Super Bowl snack?

Savory "Cupcakes" to Appear on new LA Food Truck

I love food trucks, but I haven't yet experienced eating from a LA food truck. LA has some pretty awesome food trucks. I mean, a food truck devoted to grilled cheese sandwiches?! Yes please.

Catering company, Heirloom LA, now has their own food truck for roaming around the streets of LA. The reason I'm writing about them is because one of their food items is called Lasagna Cupcakes. Let me explain: they are "individual sized portions of lasagna that hold their shape after being heated up and can be eaten with your hands." They look and sound delicious!!

Meat Lasagna Cupcake Package ($42):
2 Wild Boar and Bolognese and Fresh Mozzarella
2 Short Rib and Robiola
2 Lamb Ragu and Fresh Mozzarella

Vegetarian Lasagna Cupcake Package ($42):
2 Roasted Vegetable Caponata and Ricotta
2 Sage, Brown Butter, and Pumpkin and Smoked Mozzarella
2 Smoked Mac-n-Cheese

You don't have to live in LA to taste these savory cupcakes. Lasagna cupcakes can shipped frozen on dry ice so you can keep them frozen for up to a month. I might just have to search out this food truck so I can try them myself.

Mini Cupcake Clash Competitors (Part 1)

Welcome to SF Food Wars: Mini Cupcake Clash! I attended this fabulous event about a week ago (October 18, 2009) in San Francisco, CA. This was the first large cupcake contest that I've attended. I had a blast! And despite eating enough cupcakes to make me feel sick, I was still craving more that night. Go figure!

I've already posted the details and the winners of this event on a previous post. This post, along with the next few posts, highlights all of the twenty-two entrants.

Team #1: Zaftig Sweets "So What Spiced Mocha"
Sadly, this was my least favorite cupcake. I generally don't enjoy vegan cupcakes (although you might see that my opinion changes --hint, hint--).

Team #2: Team Mustache "Guinness Gasm"
My hubby and I both liked these. Almost exactly like the Irish Car Bomb cupcakes my friend Dave made for St. Patrick's Day. Great aftertaste.

Team #3: Baby Bites "Bacon & Chive Poppers"
My first savory cupcakes. I'm still debating on whether savory cupcakes are really cupcakes. That's a whole other discussion. These "cupcakes" were pretty tasty, despite not being sweet. There was even a cherry tomato in the middle. If you're interested in the recipe, you can DM @marycray

Team #4: Team Chomp "Viva Churrito!"
One of my husband's favorites! These cupcakes had a homemade churro chip on top. Pretty good!

Team #5: Double the Yum! "It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time!"
These cupcakes won the award for People's Choice Honorable Mention (for close-up photo see previous post). And in case you didn't notice, these girls are twins!

Team #6: Team Pound "Fromage et Trois"
Another savory "cupcake."

Team #7: Team TimeCube "Autumn Apple"
I can't remember trying an apple cupcake before this, but why not? Two of my favorite foods put together! Even more interesting is the type of apple used: Gravenstein. I had never tried or even heard of this type of apple. After eating this cupcake, I need to find those apples! This was the second place winner for my favorite cupcake. The frosting was definitely the best of all of the cupcakes. The little bit of caramel on top really made the cupcake. Delicious!

Team #8: Mission Minis "Cinnamon Horchata"
These cupcakes won the award for Judges 3rd place. I got the chance to talk to Brandon Arnovick, the owner of Mission Minis. It sounds like his cupcake company is doing really well. You can buy his cupcakes at many coffee shops, yogurt shops, delis, and Whole Foods in the San Francisco area. You know his cupcakes have to be good if they are being sold at Whole Foods! His cupcake was another one of my top favorites for the day. The frosting was perfect, which is something that is so important for a cupcake.

Coming Up: Teams #9-15
