A Look Back at Munchathon

Munchathon - Run and Eat, Eat and Run

I like to run and I love to eat, so this race totally makes sense to me. Munchathon is a food-themed 5k and obstacle course. The sample-sized food that you'll encounter on the course is from gourmet food trucks and local vendors. One of the featured food items is cupcakes from Meringue Bake Shop.
After the 5k, there is a festival of gourmet food trucks, beverages, and entertainment. So far there are 20 food trucks confirmed, including the Go Country 105 Chuck Wagon featuring B Sweet Catering cupcakes, Short Stop BBQ featuring Cupcake Blake cupcakes, the Bakery Truck and lots of food trucks I've been dying to try, like the Grilled Cheese Truck.
The event takes place in July 16 at Santiago Oak Park, next to Irvine Lake. Registration for the 5k includes admission to the festival ($49), but you can buy festival admission separate ($12) if you prefer not to burn calories before. I'll be there wobbling through the run course and stuffing my face after. I hope to see you there too!

Savory "Cupcakes" to Appear on new LA Food Truck
Catering company, Heirloom LA, now has their own food truck for roaming around the streets of LA. The reason I'm writing about them is because one of their food items is called Lasagna Cupcakes. Let me explain: they are "individual sized portions of lasagna that hold their shape after being heated up and can be eaten with your hands." They look and sound delicious!!
2 Wild Boar and Bolognese and Fresh Mozzarella
2 Short Rib and Robiola
2 Lamb Ragu and Fresh Mozzarella

You don't have to live in LA to taste these savory cupcakes. Lasagna cupcakes can shipped frozen on dry ice so you can keep them frozen for up to a month. I might just have to search out this food truck so I can try them myself.

Review: B Sweet Catering
Last week I introduced you to B Sweet Catering. They are a catering company based in Los Angeles that recently stepped into the food truck world. I met up with Barb and Kurt at their kitchen in LA to see what B Sweet Catering was all about. I found great cupcakes (and bread) made by great people. I love that!
Lots of flavors to choose from. It was hard to pick which ones I wanted to eat. Yes, I would have liked to try them all, but after a huge dinner from Pinches Tacos in LA, my stomach said "no way."
Thin Mint
Samoa
Mocha
Vanilla Bean
S'mores
Pink Lemonade
Chocolate Ganache
The crowd consensus was: we love these cupcakes! Some of our favorites were: Mocha, Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Fudge, and Pink Lemonade. My personal favorite was the Chocolate Fudge, which reminded me of Texas sheet cake. I also really enjoyed the Girl Scouts cupcakes, as these are my two favorite flavors of Girl Scout cookies.
One of my favorite items of the night is one that's not pictured: Chocolate Chip Banana Bread. I could eat this every day! It was so moist and perfect.
B Sweet is a catering company that sells delicious homemade desserts. You can also find their desserts and savory food sold on the Go Country Chuck Wagon. Hopefully we will see them roaming the streets of Orange County soon, so I can get some more of their yummy treats.

Meet B Sweet Catering

Not only does B Sweet have the "sweetest, best, tastiest, moistest, yummiest desserts made by scratch, by hand, daily," they also have a savory menu with sandwiches, snacks, salads, sushi, and savory meals.

The most recent development in the B Sweet story is the addition of the Go Country 105 FM Chuck Wagon. B Sweet has paired up with Go Country radio station to create a food truck that serves country food, along with their award-winning desserts. The truck currently roams LA, but they plan on coming to Orange County soon too.

The Chuck Wagon food menu looks amazing! Chili & Cornbread, Stuffed Fried Jalapenos, Fried Mac & Cheese, Pulled Pork Sliders, Fried Chicken, Cajun Fried Catfish, Pot Pit, Fried Picked Chips, Swet Potato Fries, Go Global Tacos (tacos from around the world), 12 kinds of sandwiches, cupcakes, funnel cakes, Sweet Potato Pie & much, much more!
I met Barb, the owner of B Sweet Catering, and Kurt last weekend and got the whole rundown of the truck. I seriously can't wait to try their food! Depending on the event, some days its just savory, some days just desserts. They will be coming to Orange County soon, but you can find them in Los Angeles right now.
Not only did I get to meet Barb and Kurt, I also got to sample some of the baked goods, including their cupcakes! I'll have the full review up soon.

Attendees are encouraged to bring folding tables, chairs and blankets.
Celebrities helping to bring awareness to the hunger crisis in Orange County will be on hand to take pictures and sign autographs for a donation of 10 non-perishable canned or dry good items, per person. “From the outside, Orange County appears to be a privileged community and yet according to the Second Harvest Food Bank, approximately 615,000 Orange County residents are at risk of going hungry each month,” said Jason Iehl, founder of Saturday Night Foodies. “With the respective fans of the participating celebrities, and followers of the gourmet food trucks and food bloggers, we have the power to bring awareness to the hunger problem taking place in our own backyard and really make a difference. We felt holding a food drive would be a great way to rally the foodie community to give to those less fortunate.”
Because the economy has been slow to rebound, donations have been low this year. In turn, the Second Harvest member agencies are reporting an average 35 percent increase in demand for food assistance. The goal of the Drive Out Hunger mobile food drive is to collect 1,000 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Gourmet food truck followers and food enthusiasts are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned or dry food donations when they go to their favorite gourmet food trucks or food truck events during the two week food drive.
The donations that are needed most are:
Non-perishable canned goods or dry food**:
- Canned meats, fish, soup, fruits, vegetables
- Pasta
- Hot and cold cereal
- Macaroni and cheese
- Rice
- Beans
- Peanut butter
Personal care items:
- Diapers
- Toothpaste and toothbrushes
- Toilet paper
- Soap
** Please no glass containers or expired items.
The following gourmet food trucks will be at the event to accept donations: Bakery Truck, Barcelona on the Go, CalbiBBQ, Chomp Chomp Truck, ChunknChip, Crepes Bonaparte, DanDanBBQ, Dos Chinos, Lee’s Philly, Lomo Arigato, Louks, Oh For Sweets Sake, Piaggio on Wheels, Seabirds, Shortstop BBQ, The Burnt Truck, The Greasy Wiener, The Lime Truck, and Tropical Shave Ice.
For food enthusiasts that are not located in Orange County, but want to contribute, a virtual food drive has been established online so they can participate regardless of where they are located. Please visit www.saturdaynightfoodies.com and click on the Drive Out Hunger icon to make a monetary contribution. Participating bloggers helping with the virtual drive are: The Cupcake Activist, Diary of a Mad Hungry Woman, Gourmet Food Truck, Marian the Foodie, Just Spotted, Save the Food Trucks and Savored.
