Dreyer's Ice Cream Cupcakes

Dreyer's Ice Cream recently posted this photo of ice cream cupcakes on their Facebook page. I've never tried making ice cream cupcakes, thinking they would be too complicated. But after seeing this inside view, maybe they wouldn't be impossible to make.

According to Dreyer's, after the cupcakes cool, cut out the middle of the cupcake and fill with ice cream. Put the top back on and freeze. When the cupcakes are ready to be eaten, frost and enjoy!

Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Cupcakes from Taste and Tell

I've always been scared to make an ice cream cake. Why? Because you have to work with an ingredient that is a bit temperamental: ice cream.

But Taste and Tell makes it look so easy with these Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Cupcakes. The basic gist is this: use a chocolate cupcake recipe and only fill the wrappers 1/3 of the way. Once the cupcakes have cooled, add a scoop of ice cream, and top with whipped cream. And eat immediately! Thanks Taste and Tell!

Ice Cream Cupcake: Yes or No?

Can you believe that I hadn't taste an ice cream cupcake until last week? Crazy, I know! But truthfully, I haven't really seen any for sale, just read about them online.

So of course when my favorite cupcake shop is selling them on their cupcake truck, I knew it was destiny! I had to have one right now!

I rushed home so I could share it with my hubby. We both agreed that this ice cream cupcake was amazing! The cake was the normal chocolate cake that you'd find on a cupcake. The center was a scoop of mint n chip ice cream. The frosting on top was a minty whipped frosting, just like the frosting you'd find on a Baskin Robbins ice cream cake. This cupcake was outstanding and perfect for a hot summer day. I can't wait to try the other flavors!

You can taste a delicious ice cream cupcake too by catching the My Delight Truck. You can find their locations by following them on Twitter (@mydelighttruck).

My Delight Truck Comes to Orange County

I recently named My Delight Cupcakery in Ontario, CA as my second favorite cupcakery. So you can imagine my "delight" when I found out their cupcake truck is now serving Orange County!

I was even more excited to check their Twitter account (@mydelighttruck) one day and discovered they were just around the block! Of course I ran over and picked up some of my favorite cupcakes, along with a new treat.

My little guy was fast asleep so I didn't have to feel so bad not sharing with him.

My dinner for the night: Snickerdoodle, Cookies n Cream, Caramel Cheesecake, and a Mint n Chip ICE CREAM cupcake. I don't think it's even necessary to talk about how much I loved every single cupcake. But I will. This ice cream cupcake needs a deeper look. Stay tuned...

Ice Cream Sundae Cupcakes

I love the look of these cupcakes from Love From the Oven. They suggest that these Ice Cream Sundae cupcakes would be great gifts for Teacher's Appreciation Day or Mother's Day (that was a few days ago though). I agree! One tip they recommend is that you make the frosting on the thick side since you are going to "scoop" it onto the top of the cupcake Brilliant! You can check out the full post here.

Time for the Red, White, and Blue

One of my favorite holidays of the year is the 4th of July. I love feeling patriotic. I love fireworks. I love swimming. I love barbecuing. I love red, white, and blue desserts. Every year I see some creative 4th of July cupcakes. Remember cupcake kabobs two years ago? Awesome. This year I found a few more to add to my 4th of July dessert list.

Review: Frosted Cupcakery

I've been hearing about the awesomeness of Frosted Cupcakery in Long Beach for years. Long Beach isn't that far, so why haven't I been there yet? Answer: I didn't know, I just didn't know how great it would be.

About six months ago I bought a Groupon for Frosted Cupcakery. I figured that would finally get me into their shop. Well, it did, but two days too late. My Groupon had expired, but Frosted Cupcakery accepted it for the face value. Instead of getting 6 cupcakes for $9, I got 3 cupcakes. At least it wasn't a total loss.

My husband and I were on our way back from the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach when we decided to stop by. Luckily, Frosted is open late (until 9pm), so they still had plenty of cupcakes when I popped in.

Although Frosted Cupcake is famous for their ice cream cupcakes, all I had was my Groupon (no money), so I picked a few of the regular popular cupcakes. But I certainly wasn't disappointed.

My Picks:
Nutella
Red Velvet
Chocolate Caramel Toffee

Did Frosted Cupcakery live up to its reputation? I can happily say YES! The cake on all three cupcakes was moist. The frosting was thick and creamy, just the perfect buttercream and cream cheese frostings. Some shops just know how to make perfect frosting. The proportion of frosting of cake was spot on. I also liked how Frosted cupcakes have a little more than a normal cupcake. The red velvet had a chocolate candy on top, the nutella had a nutella candy on top, and the chocolate caramel toffee had toffee rolled around the edges. Each of these distinguishing additions made the cupcakes a little more special. They weren't just pieces of cake with a dab of frosting, they were edible works of art.

All I know is I HAVE to go back so I can try more flavors and taste their ice cream cupcakes. Frosted Cupcakery is the only cupcake shop I know of that sells ice cream cupcakes. I would highly recommend Frosted Cupcakery because of the their delicious cupcakes, the wide selection of cupcakes available, and their reasonable prices (cupcakes are $2.95 each).

Cold Stone Cupcakes Staying Around

If you were worried that you would miss the new Ice Cream Cupcakes at Stone Cold Creamery (originally available until March 31), fear not! It seems that Cold Stone is having so much success with the cupcakes that they are making them a permanent item on the menu.

Thanks to info from the Food Frenzy blog, we also know that Cold Stone will be trying out a new item this summer which involves Jell-O pudding. The word is that Cold Stone will be offering ice cream flavors inspired by Jell-O pudding, BUT the ice cream will be a different consistency than it normally is. When the ice cream melts, it will have the consistency of Jell-O pudding. Count me in!

Cold Stone Cupcakes are Wanted by Everyone!

It seems that everyone is as excited about Ice Cream Cupcakes as I am. I stopped by Cold Stone Creamery last night to try the new cupcakes but they were sold out! The employee I talked to said that the cupcakes sell out every day.

Even thought I was let down about the absence of Ice Cream Cupcakes, I figured that since I was in Cold Stone I might as well get some ice cream. I tried the Sweet Cream ice cream since it is inside the Sweet Cream Ice Cream Cupcake. I really enjoyed it and hope to try it in a cupcake soon.

I have received comments from some readers who have tried the Ice Cream Cupcakes. Several of them have expressed disappointment that there isn't more cake. I like cake more than ice cream so I might have the same opinion. But we will see!

One interesting thing to note is that the cupcakes are only sold in packs of six ($10). I was hoping that I wouldn't have to buy six of them because then I might be tempted to eat all of them.

Cold Stone Cupcakes

Cold Stone Creamery sent out a press release this morning announcing that they will be selling Ice Cream Cupcakes for a limited time. These Ice Cream Cupcakes will be sold in a six-pack for $9.99 and will be available starting today (February 4) until March 31, 2009.

The Ice Cream Cupcakes will be available in three different flavors. They all sound so delicious:
  1. Cake Batter Delux: red velvet cake with fudge and cake batter ice cream in a rich Belgian chocolate shell, topped with pink frosting and sprinkles
  2. Sweet Cream: yellow cake with fudge and sweet cream ice cream in a rich Belgian chocolate shell, topped with Bettercreme frosting and Duo Mistrals topping
  3. Double Chocolate Devotion: devil's food cake with fudge and chocolate ice cream in a rich Belgian chocolate shell, topped with Bettercreme frosting and Oreo cookie
And if that wasn't good enough, select locations will let customers create their own ice cream cupcakes. It's been a while since I've been to Cold Stone, but it looks like I need to visit soon. Let me know if you've seen or tried this new treat!
