CupShakes at Casey's Cupcakes

Casey's Cupcakes recently announced the addition of CupShakes to their menu. I love the idea of blending a cupcake to make a cupcake milkshake, but this isn't the first time I've seen this concept. Sammy's Cafe in Provo, Utah first introduced CupShakes to the world, using cupcakes from Sweet Tooth Fairy in 2009. I've also seen cupcake milkshakes at Sprinkles Ice Cream shop. I'm happy to see this delicious concept spreading to different shops.

A BQ Needs a Reward....or Two

On Tuesday I shared how I recently qualified to run the Boston Marathon. This deserves a huge reward, and luckily I was close to Sweet Tooth Fairy to indulge! I was literally outside for them to open at 10:30am. I couldn't have been more excited!

Sometimes you need a little savory to offset all of the sweet you'll be eating. I inhaled a cheeseburger and let the sugar time begin. I walked out of Sweet Tooth Fairy with two sugar cookies and two cupcakes. Luckily I had a 6 hour drive ahead to spread out the sugar indulgence!

I bought two flavors of cupcakes that I hadn't tried from Sweet Tooth Fairy before: Salted Caramel and Twix (the flavor of the month). Both were outstanding! My husband especially loved the Salted Caramel and we had to fight for the last bite. The Twix cupcake was filled with chocolate and caramel. It was delicious!

The sugar cookies were topped with Sweet Tooth Fairy's signature vanilla buttercream frosting, which has a hint of almond extract. It's not my favorite vanilla buttercream, but I still thoroughly enjoyed both sugar cookies. 

I got four items and walked out of Sweet Tooth Fairy spending just $10. I forget how much of a bargain they are. If you haven't been to Sweet Tooth Fairy yet, you must go. They have 10 locations and are still expanding. They are located in Utah and soon Arizona.

Sweet Tooth Fairy in St. George

It's not secret that Sweet Tooth Fairy is one of my favorite cupcake shops of all time. I reviewed their Provo location last year and have been craving them every day. Since then, Sweet Tooth Fairy has expanded to Draper, Salt Lake City, and St. George, Utah.

Well, lucky me! I just happened to be in St. George for Thanksgiving with my husband's family! There was no way I was not going to visit Sweet Tooth Fairy. After a few hours of exploring the mountain bike trails of St. George, my husband and I quickly drove there and had no problems spoiling our dinner.

The cupcakes looked just as good as I remembered.

The decor was the same as the original store in Provo, Utah.

This time I was not leaving without a cookie. But the cookie didn't last long enough for a picture. I loved it!

We gathered our goodies and headed back to "Thanksgiving central," the house where the 24 of us spent the weekend. (And let me tell you, sharing one bathroom with 22 people is not easy.)

My sister-in-laws and I tasted all of the cupcakes and goodies to make sure they were safe for the rest of the family.




Cake bites were a first for most of the people there. We got a few flavors to try. I like the chocolate peanut butter best.



When I visited Sweet Tooth Fairy last year, I sampled every flavor they had available that day. I was in heaven! So this time I wanted to try any flavors that were new to me.

Grasshopper

This was my first time trying Sweet Tooth Fairy's chocolate mint cupcake, but it wasn't my first time trying this flavor. My sister-in-law Kristine thought the mint was too overpowering. Sometimes this happens when you have mint in a dessert and then it tastes like mouthwash. I thought that there was just the perfect amount of mint. I liked it.

Pumpkin

This was no ordinary pumpkin. This cupcake had pumpkin cake AND pumpkin buttercream frosting (instead of the usual cream cheese frosting). My sister-in-law Julie thought that it had too much pumpkin flavor. But I thought it was interesting and unique and I really enjoyed it! I wish it could be around all year. I like that Sweet Tooth Fairy did something different.

Chocolate Fudge

Kristine liked this chocolate cupcake better than the Grasshopper. Tami, my other sister-in-law loved the thick fudgy frosting.

Sweet Potato Pie

This was definitely a new flavor to me and I loved it! One sister-in-law said it was too sweet, but another really liked it. My niece Hailey also liked it. I would definitely like to eat this again, but I'm guessing it's just as seasonal flavor.




The day that Sweet Tooth Fairy expands to southern California will be the day that I've died and gone to cupcake heaven. But maybe it's a good thing that Sweet Tooth fairy isn't close by...then I appreciate it more. At least that's what I tell myself.

Guest Review: Sweet Tooth Fairy

Utah is exploding with cupcakes!! Don't believe me?...Just ask Becky from Utah Loves Cupcakes. If I had to live in Utah just eating cupcakes, I would be one happy girl.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for all of you Utes), one of the best cupcake shops exists in Utah. I reviewed Sweet Tooth Fairy when I visited Utah last winter. Only two words need to be said about it: AMAZING CUPCAKES!

Last month I reported on Sweet Tooth Fairy's expansion. Since I haven't been able to attend the new shop, I got the next best thing: a guest review! My good friend Kristin is a writer for the South Valley Journal. She was more than happy to do some research for me. Here's her review for Sweet Tooth Fairy's new location in Draper, Utah:


The Sweet Tooth Fairy Bakeshop just opened in Draper, Utah and as a lover of all things sweet, I was delighted to be asked by Elise to review its newest location.



As soon as you enter, the decor screams out to sweet lovers that they have found a new home. Written right on the wall is a message that reads... "Our bakeshop is a HAVEN for people who share a common belief in the MAGIC OF SWEETS."

Brittany, the manager of the Draper store, provided me with an array of different cupcakes and delicious baked goods to sample. It was a tough job, but someone had to do it! We sample a variety of cupcakes and some Cake Bites (which received national acclaim on the Rachael Ray show).



My Cupcake Appraisal

Cutting right to the cake, the standouts here are their fruity cupcakes. Lots of bakeries can do chocolate and peanut butter, but can't always master fruit-themed cupcakes. In most cases I found I loved the fruit flavors over all others with only one HUGE exception. If you find yourself here, go right for the fruit flavors, you won't be disappointed.



Here is my breakdown on the treats, in order of my interest in them:

Dulce de Leche: Even though I said fruity flavors stand supreme at The Sweet Tooth Fairy, the exception is the Dulve de Leche, it's hands down my number one selection. This scrumptious cupcake consisted of a tender crusty outer layer which seals in the chewy, milky, caramel goodness. This is the sweetest moistest cake you'll ever eat.

Strawberry Shortcake: The cake is so moist you can almost ring it out. The frosting tastes like a strawberry milkshake and is generously portioned, but leaves you wanting more. It's topped with a fresh chocolate dipped strawberry.

Strawberry Cheesecake: It was almost like eating a piece of cheesecake out of a cupcake paper. The flavor was perfect, as was the texture which was moist and dense. The crumbled grahams on top really tied it all together.

Raspberry Lemonade: Downright chewy cake, but not like a brownie...much, much lighter. You can absolutely taste the REAL raspberries inside the bright pink cake. The iridescent sugar sprinkles atop the lemonade-flavored frosting make the whole cupcake glisten.

Orange: Similar to the Strawberry Shortcake, but with orange cake and orange frosting. It was very moist and chewy. Another fruity stand-out for sure!

Chocolate Cheesecake: A marble cake, I enjoyed feeling the difference in texture between the two flavors of cake. The frosting is where the cheesecake flavor jumps out at you. The chocolate fudge drizzle on top ties it all together like a little tiny present.

Grasshopper: Best chocolate cupcake I've ever eaten by a mile! It's tastes strikingly similar to a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie.

Vanilla Milk Chocolate: Best basic cupcake, hands down. If you have a child with you...this is the one for them. No whistles or bells, just a very, very good vanilla cake with chocolate frosting topped with chocolate chips.

Double Fudge: If chocolate reigns superior in your world, this is your cake. It was a lot of chocolate for me, but chocolate lovers won't mind that at all.

Red Velvet: This just tastes fancy. Very super-duper moist cake...does it have a hint of cherry in it? Or is that almond extract? The frosting was a surprise, not cream cheese frosting like you might expect with red velvet.

German Chocolate: Cake so wet, yet it still holds together perfectly. The cake has a hint of coconut in a very mild chocolate flavor. I almost didn't even taste chocolate in the light brown cake. The frosting was excellent especially the dash of coconut pecan frosting on top.

Toasted Coconut: I am a huge coconut person. I was so excited to try this cake. I thought it tasted more almondy than coconutty (to be fair, I just got back from a trip to Maui and my idea of coconut is really pina-colada which this was not). I am told that this is one of the flavors people love and rave about.

Vanilla Squared: This was not what I was expecting in a vanilla cupcake. I tasted lots of almond extract flavor. It was a little too sweet for me, but I know some people love that. This also is one of the flavors that made them famous, so perhaps I just didn't get it.





Another Sweet Tooth Fairy original is their Cake Bites. I sampled each of the flavors and rate them in this order:

1. Coconut
2. Chocolate Mint
3. Peanut Butter
4. Double Fudge
5. Lemon
6. Strawberry

I thought it odd that I enjoyed the Cake Bites in almost opposite order of how I enjoyed the cupcakes. I must say that the Coconut Cake Bite was out of this world! But at a dollar a piece, they better be...ouch!



Sweet Afterthoughts About the Experience

I appreciate their cupcakes are regular-sized, like the ones you bake at home, rather than the oversized cupcakes sold at other bakeries which give you too large a portion, leaving you guilt-ridden if you eat the whole thing. ONE cupcake is the perfect portion size, you don't need two to be satisfied, although it is fun to sample more than one flavor. I recommend going with a friend, as I did, and sharing different flavors.

I don't have any nutrition information, and maybe it's best that I don't. Here is what I can tell you about the nutrition...I am a member of Weight Watchers. Every time I have eaten two cupcakes in the same week, I have not liked the number I see at my week weigh-in.

Thank you Kristin for your in-depth review. Now I'm drooling all over my desk. I remember loving that Dulce de Leche cupcake too. One of my favorite cupcakes of all time! Maybe, if I'm lucky enough, Sweet Tooth Fairy will expand all the way to Orange County. A girl can wish, can't she?

Sweet Tooth Fairy Opens New Location

Although I have a race on Saturday, I secretly wish I was going to be in Utah for the grand opening celebration of the Sweet Tooth Fairy's second store. I reviewed the Sweet Tooth Fairy almost three months ago and have been in love with them ever since. Their success has led to the expansion of their second store in Draper, Utah.

Their grand opening celebration takes place on Saturday, March 27 at 10:00am. They will be giving away 100 mini cupcakes on a first come first serve basis. They will also be holding a giveaway for a year's supply of cupcakes (one dozen a month for a year). Oh how I would love that!

Review: Sweet Tooth Fairy

Last stop on my Utah cupcake quest: Sweet Tooth Fairy! I've been wanting to visit Sweet Tooth Fairy for a year; they opened just after my trip to Utah last winter. I was pretty excited about my visit to Sweet Tooth Fairy because not only would I be eating cupcakes, but I would also be meeting Becky of Utah Loves Cupcakes.



Becky was as sweet as I thought she would be! It was so much fun to talk to someone who is as passionate about cupcakes as I am. Megan, the owner of Sweet Tooth Fairy, was not able to be there for the tasting, but she asked Becky to fill me in on everything, since Becky knows so much about the store.

First glance at the cupcakes and I knew I was in heaven! They were so beautiful and I just knew they were going to taste marvelous!

Sweet Tooth Fairy provided a cupcake tasting tray for me. Almost all of the flavors were available for me to try. Scroll to bottom of post to read about which flavors I enjoyed.

I also got to sample their famous Double Fudge Cake Bites that were featured on The Rachel Ray Show. I thought I knew how these would taste, but they were so much better. The chocolate wasn't overwhelming and the moist cake-frosting inside was perfect!

Becky and I had a great time talking about cupcakes: how we eat them, how we review them, our favorites, etc. She has quite a reputation in Utah. All of the cupcake shop owners know who she is.

Sweet Tooth Fairy has recently started making a new kind of cupcake: the MashUp Cupcake. "We're taking our most delicious stand-alone flavors and mashing them up with other decadent flavors to create the perfectly paired cupcake (STF)." The day that I was there, the MashUp Cupcake was Chocolate Raspberry. Wow, they have a good thing going on! They have continued to make different MashUps. Last week they had Raspberry Cheesecake and Black Cherry Cordial.

Sweet Tooth Fairy doesn't just sell cupcakes, they also have a large assortment of other tasty treats. I spotted cookies, brownies, lemon bars, and cake bites.

Cute decor! I loved the jars of sprinkles on the wall. I thought that was a nice touch.

As much as my head told me that I wouldn't be able to eat all of those cupcakes, my stomach thought differently. It was just so hard to stop eating when the cupcakes were fantastic! Let me share some of the highlights with you.

My favorite: Cheesecake.

I have always been a huge cheesecake fan, so the combination of cupcakes and cheesecake was delightful for me. Sweet Tooth Fairy puts cheesecake in the cake and frosting. Cake-perfect, frosting-perfect. I couldn't get enough of this one!

Runner-Up: Dulce de Leche.

I don't believe that I've ever had a dulce de leche cupcake before and I'm sad that I had to wait this long to try one. Again, there was dulce de leche in the cake and frosting. So delicious!

Honorable Mentions:
Vanilla Chocolate.
The frosting on this one was unbelievable. Sometimes I'm turned off by a chocolate frosting that is too heavy, but this frosting was just right.

Strawberry Shortcake.
Strawberry frosting. Mmmmm...yummy.

Peanut Butter.
Hard to go wrong with peanut butter and chocolate.

Observation: Becky told me that Sweet Tooth Fairy is famous for their frosting. Me, being a big frosing critic, put Sweet Tooth Fairy to the test. The result: (as if you couldn't tell before) absolutely delicious! The one thing I noticed was that the vanilla frosting was different than any other vanilla frosting I had ever tasted before. Becky and I discussed what we think makes it different. Possibly the addition of almond extract or marzipan. Not sure, but it doesn't matter because whatever it is, I like it.

I took a few cupcakes from the shop to share with my friends. My friend Kristen described these cupcakes perfectly, "It's like a song in my mouth."

If I could only eat from one cupcake shop in Utah ever again, this would be the place! Everything about Sweet Tooth Fairy is exactly how I would want my dream cupcake shop to be. From the flavors, to the frosting, to the other treats...it was perfect! The only downfall: it's in Utah and I live in California. Oh well, that will just make my trips to Utah more exciting. Thank you, Sweet Tooth Fairy!

Sweet Tooth Fairy gives to Subs for Santa

Giving back has it's perks. The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah is sponsoring families in the United Way program, Subs for Santa. You can help and be rewarded too. Before 2pm on December 24, bring an unwrapped toy for a child between 18 months and 14 years of age into Sweet Tooth Fairy and received a FREE CUPCAKE. They are also taking cash donations for this program.

SusieCakes has also been doing a toy drive in exchange for a free cupcake at all of their locations. The toy drive ends today (December 23).



I haven't been to The Sweet Tooth Fairy yet, but I should be trying them out in less than two weeks. My husband and I are traveling to Utah to do some snowboarding again and I plan on visiting many, many cupcakeries. Can't wait. Let me know if you have any recommendations!
