Open Shop Night at [desi]gn cakes & cupcakes

How often do you get to eat award-winning cupcakes?

Every so often [desi]gn cakes & cupcakes hosts Open Shop Nights at their commercial kitchen, where you can stop by to eat and buy cupcakes.

This Thursday they will be hosting another one of their fabulous events. If you happen to be near the Chino, CA area on Thursday night, you should definitely swing by. I used to work in Chino, so this would have been perfect for me, but now I don't get out there as often. You can find all of the info you need on the flyer above.

Hapa Cupcakes Looking for Help for Storefront

Last fall I introduced you to Hapa Cupcakes, an online custom-order bakery located in Orange County. What makes them so unique is the type of cupcakes they make: alcohol-infused.

Their dream is to open a storefront and they are using gofundme as a way to do it. Right now they are trying to raise $20,000 to make their dreams happen. If you'd like to help them, you can donate on their fundraising page here.

Rumor has it they will also be on Cupcake Wars on June 30. I always love to see local cupcake shops on the show. Good luck to Hapa Cupcakes!

[desi]gn cakes & cupcakes WINS Cupcake Wars

Another local-to-Southern-California cupcake shop wins Young & the Restless episode on Food Network's Cupcake Wars!

I first encountered [desi]gn cakes & cupcakes at Cupcake Camp IE in 2010. Then Desiree won a competition I judged in 2011 called Sugar Rush. Later that year she was a contestant on Cupcake Wars, but did not win.

Now she's claimed redemption! Last week [desi]gn cakes was on Cupcake Wars again and WON! Congrats to a well-deserved win!

They are BIG news right now, as they also had a two-day pop-up shop at Nordstrom's in Fashion Island last week. Sadly, I was out of town so I could not attend, but I'm sure it was fabulous.

[desi]gn cakes makes one of the most unique cupcakes I've ever tasted -- buffalo chicken. Yes, you heard me right and it's delicious! I gotta get over to their commercial kitchen in Chino soon so I can try it again.

Local Cupcake Shop Wins Cupcake Wars

This week's episode of Cupcake Wars featured four cupcake shops competing to win $10,000 and a chance to display at the Food & Wine Festival in Hawaii. I was super excited to see a local cupcake shop, Bubba Sweets, on this episode.

I visited Bubba Sweets in Huntington Beach 16 months ago, a week before I had my baby. My friends threw me a surprise baby shower in Bubba Sweets! It was so cool! But before I had a chance to blog about it, along came Desmond and it got lost in the shuffle of newborn baby stuff.

Now that they are famous and have won Cupcake Wars, I need to revisit and do an official cupcake review. I can't wait!

Bubba Sweets (Huntington Beach, CA) **WINNER**
Kreative Kupcakes (Avondale, AZ)
Trey B Cakes (Sacramento, CA)
Wah Wah Cakes (Harlem, NY)

Cupcake Wars is Back

Candace and Florian are back to judge cupcakes. I was hoping I'd get a call for the job, but maybe next season. This first episode is about baking cupcakes for a VIP event at the San Diego Zoo. The first challenge even involves crickets. Hmmm...not sure about that one. Are you still watching?

Pure Cupcakes (San Diego, CA) *WINNER*

Cloud 9 Cupcakes (Atlanta, GA)

Cake That! (Manahawkin, NJ)

Rockin' Cupcakes (Rochester Hills, MI)

Cowabunga Dude!

There are two reasons I liked this episode of Cupcake Wars. First, the bakers were husband-wife teams. Second, they were competing to provide cupcakes at an event to celebrate the re-launch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Yes! One of my favorite cartoons growing up.

For the first challenge, they had to bake a cupcake using pizza as inspiration. In case you didn't know, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles LOVE pizza. Very appropriate! But my husband would be disappointed with two of the teams because he doesn't believe in Hawaiian pizza. He likes his sweet and savory foods to stay separated. Do you agree with him?

Lancaster Cupcakes (Lancaster, PA)
Kissi Cakes n Sweets (Dublin, OH)

"On the Road" Food Network App

Are you a big Food Network fan (like me) and wish you could visit every restaurant, bakery, and food truck featured on all the shows?! Then the new Food Network app is perfect for you! The new On the Road app recommends and lists all the great places featured on the top Food Network shows, such as The Best Thing I Ever Ate, The Great Food Truck Race, Cupcake Wars, and Diners, Drive-in & Dives.. You can find what's nearby if you're in a new city or you can find restaurants recommended by your favorite chefs.

I did a search of what's near my house and found The Perfect Circle Cupcakery was the closest place, as they were contestants on Cupcake Wars. I love having a cupcakery so close, but I wish their cupcakes weren't so dry.

I know this app will be super useful on my next road trip. Anyone else tried it yet?

Review: The Cake Mamas

This was not my first time tasting The Cake Mamas cupcakes. They've been around the cupcake circuit for quite some time now. I first discovered them at Cupcake Camp IE in 2010, where they wowed me with their Autumn Apple cupcake. I saw them just a few months later at LA Cupcake Challenge 2011. A year later they competed and won the Wicked episode of Cupcake Wars. And most recently they won 2nd place at this year's LA Cupcake Challenge 2012 (they actually had my favorite cupcake at the event).

With all of these accolades, I definitely owed them an official visit to their shop. So after racing my first triathlon post-baby (go me!) in San Dimas, I treated myself to some cupcakes at The Cake Mamas in Glendora.

Normally a rainy Saturday afternoon would keep people away from stores, but when I arrived The Cake Mamas was packed! People were picking up custom orders, others were just stopping by for a treat, and they were also loading up a van for a catering order. There was definitely a good vibe in the air.

I've met Fabiola and Janelle several times before and they have always been super friendly. One funny fact about them is that Janelle is married to Fabiola's ex-husband. They call themselves The Cake Mamas because they are moms of the same kids. I think that's awesome!

Now onto the cupcakes. Too many choices to try all of them, so I had to narrow my decision down to nine. Yes, you heard me: I only picked nine.

Churro: cinnamon sugar cupcake with sweetmilk frosting and topped with cinnamon crunch. Packed with cinnamon flavor. I loved the crunchies on top! Easily one of the favorites of the day.

Samoa: chocolate caramel cupcake, with caramel Cloud Cream, toasted coconut, drizzled caramel, and chocolate ganache. This cupcake competed at the LA Cupcake Challenge this year. The light whipped frosting paired well with the other strong flavors. I enjoyed the caramel center.

Chocolate Salted Caramel: rich chocolate cake filled with caramel, topped with chocolate ganache and sea salt caramel. This was easily my favorite and I remembered why it was my top pick at the LA Cupcake Challenge this year. The creamy chocolate frosting combined with the caramel center and pinch of salt on top makes this cupcake perfect. Winning cupcake for sure!

Guinness Bailey's: chocolate Guinness cake with Bailey's infused frosting. I'm not an alcohol drinker, but I'm always willing to try a cupcake with a flavor I'm not familiar with. The flavor was a bit intense in the frosting (since the alcohol doesn't get a chance to burn out), but I enjoyed the flavor of the cake.

The Good Witch (lemon strawberry rhubarb): light lemon cake, filled with strawberry-rhubarb filling, topped with lemon mascarpone cream cheese frosting. This was a Cake Mamas winning cupcake on Cupcake Wars. Although the strawberry-rhubarb filling was divine, the frosting just wasn't sweet enough for me. BUT it shouldn't be sweet because it is made with mascarpone cheese, that's just my preference.

Chocolate Truffle: chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache, a thick layer of chocolate mousse, finished with dark chocolate curls. I tried this cupcake two years ago at LA Cupcake Challenge and loved it! It's full of all kinds of chocolate. The chocolate curls give it a delicious crunch.

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake: The strawberry frosting was creamy and smooth. I loved the special touch of a graham cracker crust. The cake was more dense than a normal cupcake, but that makes sense since it was a cheesecake cupcake.

Thin Mint: chocolate cupcake with mint buttercream, side rolled in Thin Mint cookie crumbs, and finished with a Thin Mint cookie. The smoothness of the frosting reminded me of thin mint ice cream. The mint flavor was perfect (unlike some that taste like toothpaste). One of favorites of the day!

Green Eggs & Ham: green cupcake, pancake flavored with maple syrup and ham, topped with maple syrup buttercream and ham. I've had many breakfast sweet/savory cupcakes before, so I was pretty sure I was going to enjoy this cupcake. Experience proved right! The whipped maple frosting tasted like whipped butter on pancakes. I wouldn't want the frosting to be any thicker or it would be too overwhelming. Surprisingly ham works well in a cupcake.

I can't resist taking pictures of my cupcake carnage. This greeted me at breakfast the next day. Talk about starting my day off right!

You can't go wrong with The Cake Mamas. Lots of cupcake choices, delicious cakes and frostings, attention to detail, and great prices ($2.50 for normal cupcakes and $3.00 for specialty). One thing worth noting is that they told me that their frostings are not typical American buttercreams. If you're hoping for an extra sweet frosting like Sprinkles, you won't find it here. I thought their frostings had just the right amount of sweetness that paired perfectly with their cupcakes. Thumbs up for The Cake Mamas!

Yo Gabba Gabba and Cupcake Wars Contest

Having a little one means I am now in the Yo Gabba Gabba world. I love this show! If you don't know this show, then you definitely don't have kids. And I feel kinda special because I know the creators.

Anyways, today Yo Gabba Gabba announced on their Facebook page that they will be on Food Network's Cupcake Wars on April 15. In honor of that, they announced a contest to win a Yo Gabba Gabba prize pack. To enter the contest, you enter a photo of your best Yo Gabba Gabba inspired cupcake. The details are explained here. Submissions must be received by 5:00pm April 6. I've seen a lot of Yo Gabba Gabba themed cakes and cupcakes, so I know many of you have photos already. I can't wait to see the winners!

Cupcake Wars Winner has Grand Opening This Weekend

I distinctly remember this episode of Cupcake Wars because I thought it was the best one. Decorating cupcakes for Comic Con sounds like a fun time! Wonderland Custom Cakes was the winner of the Comic Con episode in August, but at the time they were just an online company.

This weekend Wonderland Custom Cakes will open their doors to their own bakery. Join them Saturday, January 14 from 10am-5pm for their grand opening celebration. The flavors of the day include: Royal Red Velvet, Evil Twin (jalapeno carrot cake), Orange, Chocolate Pretzel, Coconut, Vixxxen (red hot red velvet), Peanut Butter Cookie, CinnaSwirl, and Hunka Hunka.

You can read more about Wonderland Custom Cakes in their interview with Cupcakes Take the Cake. You can also follow them on Twitter (@wonderlandcc) and like them on Facebook.

The second episode of the season aired on Sunday night and my first thought was: why do the bakers wear matching outfits? Just seems kinda weird to me. Maybe that's a new rule now.

Cupcake Wars: Comic Con Cupcakes

Four talented bakers will have to use their super powers if they want a chance to have their delicious display take center stage at Comic-Con's exclusive Masquerade Party.

Choco Patisserie (San Antonio, TX)

Wonderland Custom Cakes (online-Los Angeles, CA)

Three Babes & a Baker (Columbus, OH)

Sugar Mommy Cupcakes
(Denville, NJ)

I have to say that this was my favorite episode of the season. I absolutely LOVED the theme. This gave the bakers opportunity for great decorations. Usually the bakers do an ok job at round 2, but this time all of the bakers did outstanding with their decorating. I loved Wonderland's decorating and cupcake flavors best. I would love to try those...looks like I need to track them down.
