Cupcake Nuggets? Genius!

Cupcake Project is on fire lately! Lots of tasty-looking cupcake treats!

At first glance, I thought these were just regular chicken nuggets. So why would they be on a cupcake blog? Cupcake Project has this YUMMY post about cupcake nuggets. Yes, pieces of fried cupcakes to dip in a sauce of your pleasing. She uses raspberry jam, but you could use frosting or lemon curd. I love this idea!

You can get the recipe and all other info on Cupcake Project. Because now you have to try a fried cupcake nugget immediately!

The OC Fair and Cupcakes

I have a love affair with the Orange County Fair. I'm not interested in the giant slides, ferris wheel, games, or Weird Al's Brain. I just want fried food.

My first experience with cupcakes at the OC Fair began two years ago when I discovered the deep-fried cupcake. Although surprisingly delicious, it has yet to reappear at the fair again.

The next year, after finding out that the deep-fried cupcake was not back, I found CB's Cupcakes. They sold pretty typical cupcakes, except that you got to build the cupcake yourself. You pick the cake, frosting, and topping. Not a bad idea, but makes for a longer line.

So the OC Fair ends on Sunday and I have yet to go! My husband has been traveling a lot for work and we just haven't had the time to eat lots of fried food! Fortunately, I will be attending the fair this Saturday to judge the OC Cupcake Classic. Come stop by the Promenade Stage between 1p-3p and say hi.

Since I haven't had the chance to scope out the food this year yet, my mom let me know that CB's Cupcakes is back and selling cupcakes again. Thanks Mom!

What Would You do for a (Fried) Klondike Bar?

I absolutely LOVE the Orange County Fair!! It's the one time a year where I allow myself to eat lots and lots of fried food and not feel guilty. Two years ago I tried a deep-fried cupcake. Last year I enjoyed a fried avocado, along with lots of other fried food and a normal cupcake. So what's going to be new on the menu this year? Food Frenzy has the inside scoop.

Chicken Charlie's is the best stand for finding fried food at the OC Fair. They will fry practically anything. I like that attitude. Niyaz Pirani of Food Frenzy met with the owner of Chicken Charlie's to see what new items will be taking a trip into a deep fryer this year.

The food item I'm most excited about is the deep-fried Klondike bar! My first thought is probably the same as most of you, how can you deep-fry an ice cream bar? Answer: you freeze it at a very cold temperature (-25 degrees) and then eat it very fast. Sounds delicious!

The deep-fried Klondike bar is not the only new item you might find at Chicken Charlie's. He's also been experimenting with deep-fried Reese's, deep-fried M&Ms, and deep-fried blackberries. I can't wait...see you at the fair!

Cupcakes at the OC Fair

Saying that I love to eat is a HUGE understatement. I live to eat! So it's no surprise that the fair is one of my favorite times of the year. Last year I stumbled upon deep-fried cupcakes at the OC Fair. I can assure you that they taste a lot better than they sound. I was on a mission to find them again this year.

During my search I found a stand called Cup Cakes (original name, but I guess it's good to know exactly what they sell at that stand). Since I hadn't found the fried cupcakes yet, I decided to give them a try.

Cup Cakes is actually a company called CB's Cupcakes. They are a cupcake catering company that sells cupcakes at California fairs, special events, and their three stores (Temecula, San Diego, and Glendale). They are also available for birthday parties and weddings.

Cup Cakes is one of the few places I've seen where you can design your own cupcake. Their cake flavors are: Red Velvet, Chocolate, Vanilla, and Key Lime. The frosting choices are: Chocolate Buttercream, Vanilla Buttercream, and Cream Cheese. Then, you get to pick your topping.

I chose the Key Lime cupcake with Cream Cheese frosting topped with Graham Cracker Crumbles. When I first saw my custom cupcake I thought, a green cupcake? This isn't going to taste good. Good thing I didn't listen to myself. The cupcake was really good! The frosting was a little more whipped than I normally prefer, but the flavor was still very good. And for $2.00 (for the mini, $4.00 for the jumbo size), this was a great deal for the fair! I would definitely recommend!

I finally found the Spud Shack (the stand where I found the deep-fried cupcakes last year). Sadly, they weren't selling the cupcakes this year. That's ok, they probably aren't that good for you anyway. Since the OC Fair ended on Sunday, check out Cup Cake at the LA Fair.

Hoping Deep Fried Cupcakes are Back

Last year I went out on a limb and tried deep fried cupcakes at the OC Fair. They were surprisingly good! Well, the fair is back and I'm ready to get myself another deep fried cupcake. Has anyone seen them at the fair yet?

Fried Cupcakes at the OC Fair

NOTE: This post was also posted on one of my favorite cupcake blogs, Cupcakes Take the Cake!

Last night we made our annual trip to the OC Fair. Pretty much the only reason we go is to pig-out on greasy, fried food. Since I only do it once a year, it doesn't feel quite so glutenous.

The OC Fair has an expanding range of fried food. Every year there is something new to try. Two years ago it was the fried chicken sandwich with two Krispy Kreme doughnuts instead of a bun, topped with cheese and honey. Talk about heart attack!
So what could be better than an array of fried food at the fair? Why, a cupcake, of course! I was so excited when I saw this booth selling cupcakes. My mind was set, I was going to eat a cupcake!
So what could top wonderful fried food and a cupcake at the fair? A fried cupcake! I needed to try one!
I found the fried cupcakes at the Spud Shack. The Spud Shack also sells other fried foods, such as curly fries, tator tots, and Chocolate on-a-stick (I was slightly disappointed to find out that the "chocolate" on-a-stick was just a Tootsie Roll).
I wondered, what is a fried cupcake? Is it frosted and fried, as is? I was very intrigued! After about five minutes of waiting patiently (fried cupcakes are apparently very popular), I had mine.
I ordered the chocolate fried cupcake. From what my taste buds could gather, the cake part of the cupcake was baked and then deep-fried. After pulled out, they put a chocolate sauce on top and finished with sprinkles.
I was actually very apprehensive about trying this cupcake. I wasn't expecting to like it because it was fried. I haven't eaten many sweet foods that have been given the fried treatment, so I didn't expect it to taste very good. My first bite told a different story. It wasn't too bad. From then on, every bite was better and better. I really enjoyed it and ate the whole thing by myself.

The only thing I was bummed out on was the frosting. The thin layer of chocolate sauce wasn't enough. I wanted some real frosting, piled high on top. In hindsight, I realize that frosting would have melted because the cupcake was served hot.

Verdict: Try something new! My fried cupcake was a sweet surprise and something I will look forward to eating again next year!
