This year's OC Fair Cupcake Classic took place in the Exhibit Promenade hall with the Live, Eat, Grow exhibit. The room was packed! Whoever said the cupcake trend is dying is definitely wrong. This contest is unique in the fact that the bakers are present in the audience and are watching you eat their cupcakes.
There were five categories that the cupcakes were divided into: Professional, Amateur-Chocolate, Amateur-Fruit, Amateur-Other, and Kids. Each of the judges took a category to judge. I picked Amateur-Chocolate, as I was having a huge chocolate craving that day.
My category had nearly 30 entries. Could I survive?
All of the cupcakes were on display after the event. No public tasting though!
Each judge from the Amateur category picked their favorite cupcake to determine which would be Best in Show. My favorite was a Chocolate Cannoli cupcake. It had cannoli filling piped into the middle of the cupcake. The other two judges picked a strawberry/coolwhip/pretzel cupcake, and a lemon blueberry cupcake.
And the winner was.....the Lemon Blueberry cupcake.
The best part of the event was calling the winners on stage to receive their awards. I loved seeing the smiles and the happy tears! It made my slightly-upset stomach feel better. Congrats to all who entered the contest! I hope to see you all again next year.
